June 29, 2009
Hertford, NC

All’s fair in love and racing

By Wendy Curling

Warren McDonald of McDonald Farms Racing in Chesapeake has been racing cars most of his life. He is highly competitive and knows how to win. His six car team consisting of family and friends travels to races in two rigs in order to handle all the  gear and equipment.    The team fields 4.90 Index, Top Eliminator, Modified and three junior dragsters. They race points and they race to win.

So what...

Alexander wins third straight

By Wendy Curling

The 4.90 Index racers returned to Northeast Dragway Saturday night providing side by side, pro-tree racing at it’s best.

The 4.90 Index class leaves on a four tenths pro tree and must run as close to 4.90 seconds in the eighth mile as possible without running under, or going to fast. An elapsed time of 4.89 or faster would cause a break out foul and an automatic loss.

Mike Alexander of Mechanicsville,...

Maine keeps pace in borrowed car

By Wendy Curling

As torrential rains and high winds hammered the area on Saturday, Northeast Dragway dodged the bullet and completed the fifth points race of the season. A few light showers moved through early, just enough to settle the dust, and were all but a memory by the start of time runs as racers set their sights on winning rounds and collecting points.

With the points chase nearing the halfway mark, it’s no time for...

Juniors travel to Sumerduck, Harden captures first win

By Wendy Curling

After a soggy start to the race weekend, which forced the cancellation of Friday Night Test and Tune, track officials and racers were relieved to complete the first of three make-up points races.

Non-points racers rose to the top of the Top Eliminator field taking first and second place. Lee Brown of Chesapeake and Chris Skiles of Plymouth, N.C. faced off in the final round. Brown had the better...

Hicks wins first place in Modified

By Wendy Curling

One of the most important drag racing skills to learn is knowing exactly when to mash the gas and go. Racers refer to this as reaction time or cutting a good light. A perfect light for bracket racers is .500 and a perfect light for pro-tree racers is .400. Anything under that number results in a red light foul and an automatic loss.

For reasons yet to be explained, .499 and .501 lights are much more...

Footbraker’s from near and far traveled to Radford Virginia’s Motor Mile Dragway over Memorial Day weekend to battle for the $10,000 grand prize in the 3rd Annual Footbrake Explosion.
